Resumo: This research investigated the perception of managers and users about the influence of information technology on the performance of documentary management at a federal university. The conceptual framework of analysis was guided by the foundations of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). Methodologically, the research was characterized as qualitative, of the case study type. Semi-structured interviews, participant observation and documentary research were used to collect the data. Data analysis followed coding and categorization procedures. As results, a broad spectrum of possibilities of contribution of the information technology was identified to the performance of the documentary management. In general, these possibilities are related to user satisfaction, the quality of document management processes, the ability to learn, innovate and improve document management and optimization of the financial resources of document management and, consequently, the organization. At the research university, this contribution is partial and incipient. The maximization of the support of information technology to the performance of documentary management depends on human and social questions, besides those of a technological nature.
