Resumo: Antibiotic resistance is currently a major global challenge. The misuse of antimicrobials favors the formation of multiresistant strains, directly implicating the installation of the hospital infection and the surgical site. Thus, constant monitoring of bacterial flora present in surgical centers and knowledge about the sensitivity and resistance profile of bacteria in surgical environments is essential. This study aimed to evaluate the bacteriological profile in the Small Animals surgery sector of a Veterinary Hospital in the South of Santa Catarina. 19 animals submitted to elective surgical procedures were evaluated. Samples were collected with suabe in the region of the surgical incision after antisepsis and through plates positioned under the surgical center bench during the whole procedure. Colonies from bacterial growth were counted and identified. The isolated bacteria were cultivated in Müller Hinton Agar and performed three times for resistance and sensitivity research by McFarland standards. 56 different genres of bacteria from the surgical environment were identified. There was no post-asepsis bacterial growth in any sample. As for sensitivity, all bacteria were sensitive to the tested antimicrobials. It can be concluded that in the hospital under study there was no bacterial resistance to the antibiotics tested and the asepsis technique in the patients was effective. However, it is necessary to pay more attention to the procedures performed in the disinfection of the surgical sector, as well as the inclusion of measures that reduce levels of contamination in these places.
