Summary: | Pollution and destruction of the stratospheric ozone layer increase human exposure to ultraviolet radiation, and this can lead to many damages, such as photocarcinogenesis, photodermatosis, photoaging and especially skin cancer. The population in general has become aware of these harms and the importance of photoprotection, with this, the use of sunscreens has been growing. Sunscreens are chemical products used in the production of sunscreens, responsible for filtering or absorbing radiation depending on their classification, and one of the most used is benzophenone-3, an organic filter that provides high protection against photodegradation, and therefore has its widespread use in industrial applications of a wide range of hygiene and personal care products. Sunscreens can reach the aquatic environment directly through bathing activities in lakes, rivers and seas. Thus, we set out to detect whether there is a seasonal pattern in the appearance of BP3 residues in water samples from the aquatic environment, bearing in mind that sunscreens are more used in summer than in winter, due to the increase in recreational activities in that season, we performed a meta-analysis by searching for works in the literature with BP3 concentrations in hydrographs used in recreational activities. The result of the meta-analysis had discrepant concentrations, demonstrating a high heterogeneity (summary effect of 40.14 ng/L (95% CI: 22.27 – 58.01), 100% I² for heterogeneity), possibly explained by variations of different cultures in the use of UV filters and sunscreens in certain years and continents. If necessary, more research on the seasonality of the use of sunscreen and its UV filtering ingredients, in different hydrographies. |
