Summary: | The soft rush, a cosmopolitan plant found predominantly in the South and Southeast of Brazil, has wide utilization as ornamental cutting foliage. However, specific developed literature trying to establish production techniques for this culture is not easily found, this could help in a better commercial exploration of this plant. The objective of this work was to study the use of soft rush in gardens, the ornamental and production potential, through a growth analysis and morphologic and anatomical studies, and the capacity of answer of the cultivated reed in soils with and without organic compounds, submitted to different irrigation intensities (under inundation and daily manual irrigation) and cutting, (check without cutting and with cutting with 80 % and 100 % of remaining material). For this, two experiments were done, in vases, in an outdoor pavilion during eight months. The variables evaluated were: number of stems, senescent leaves and flowers, high, diameter of stump, size of the roots, length of the biggest root and the accumulation of fresh and dry bulk. The plasticity and fenology were obtained and organized descriptively. A regression analysis of the growth curves was also done. The quantitative data was submitted to a varying analysis, with comparison of the averages by the Tukey test with 5 % of probability. In relation to the landscape, there is an ecological tendency of using the soft rush in gardens. The production results show that under inundation conditions and with the addition of the organic compound to the substratum there are improvements on the growth and development of the soft rush. When the cuttings was apply, the cutting in 80 % increase the production of soft rush, showing that is necessary to keep a percentage of aerial material. The anatomical study shows that the species has adaptation characteristics to adverse humidity environments because the anatomical structures of the stems and roots showed differences in relation to the inflicted irrigation intensity |
