Sumari: | This is a master's dissertation that addresses the impacts generated by the construction of the Madeira River Hydroelectric Power Plants (Jirau and Santo Antônio), demonstrating how the Community of São Sebastião was affected. The aforementioned community is located downstream of the Santo Antônio Hydroelectric Power Plant. It is important to highlight that the construction of hydroelectric plants, in addition to corroborating the economic power of a government or a private company, can also be seen as the implementation of a mega development project, something very characteristic of contemporary Brazil. Due to its water potential, the Amazon presents itself as a vast field for the implementation of such projects, as was the case with the Madeira River dams. While building hydroelectric plants is seen as development and modernity for some, there are those who think and view these works as a problem that generates few benefits, since the environmental, social, economic and cultural impacts on the communities where they are built are perennial. Rondônia is a promising state, whose driving force is agriculture and livestock farming, and its history is marked by economic cycles. This is the scenario under which this study is based: with the construction of dams, the affected communities found themselves in an environment surrounded by challenges. The Community of São Sebastião, located on the left bank of the Madeira River, was founded by rubber tappers, small farmers and fishermen. Currently, it lives under the banner of uncertainty: reduced fishing, no arable land, no support from the municipal government and living under the lack of action by the Santo Antônio Energia Consortium. In view of the above, this study aims to demonstrate the main impacts (environmental, economic and cultural) suffered by the Community of São Sebastião from the construction of the Jirau and Santo Antônio hydroelectric plants. |
