Summary: | This study intends to provide contribution to the study of the historical trajectory of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (OFMCap), especially the French Province of Savoy Capuchin, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from their processes of settlement on the state. Since the Protestant Reformation the Capuchin historically represented an articulation instrument of the institutionalization of the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) and the frontier spaces between its fields of influence and institutionality. Identified by the Franciscan charisma, the friars dedicated themselves to the missionary activity that mobilized the development of a repertoire of strategies and action, which reinforced the Order as an expansion element of the Catholic Church power. Upon arriving at the State of Rio Grande do Sul in 1896, the friars integrated the project of rebuilding of the Catholic Church in Brazil, ruled by the ultramontanism and by the determinations of the Vatican Council I (1869-1870), which aimed to reinforce the centrality of Rome and the Holy See over the determinations of Catholicism. Between 1896 and 1941 the OFMcap grows from a pair of friars to a group of hundreds of members, having the direction of several parishes and convents in Rio Grande do Sul. Its main field of activity was the region occupied by the Italian immigrants in the state’s northeast. It is aimed to understand how the articulation and organization of the Order occurred through the category of territorialization (Raffestin, 1993; Rosendahl, 2012; 2018), from the building of the São Boaventura Convent in the city of Marau and the settlement of the group in the late 5th District of Passo Fundo (Marau), between the years of 1934 and 1941. The study of the specificity of the region that makes up Marau in the period makes it possible to develop an understanding of the Capuchins' practices of articulation with the episcopate, with the population and with the projects of expansion and maintenance of the Order itself. It is understood that there was a structuring of territorialization as a movement to develop the legitimacy of authority for the organization of spaces, mainly through the hegemony of the work of differentiating between the sacred and the profane. |
