Summary: | Histoplasmosis is a fungal disease caused by the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. Universal and endemic in North, Central and South America, the mycosis is transmitted by the respiratory route through the inhalation of conidia found in the dust of the dried feces of birds or bats. The infection occurs primarily in the lungs, and secondary oral lesions may develop on the tongue, palate and buccal mucosa, contracted through sputum or via hematogenous route. The main objective of this work was to study histoplasmosis in its entirety, with emphasis on secondary oral lesions of histoplasmosis, in order to expose dentists to the best methods for diagnosing and treating this infection. This paper reports the clinical case of a female patient, 39 years old, Caucasian, business administrator, suffering from lupus erythematosus, who sought care at a dental office with an extensive ulcerated lesion on the back of the tongue on the right side and a previous histopathological report. of inflammatory process. After intensive research, the patient was diagnosed with disseminated histoplasmosis, affecting the liver, intestine and bone marrow, which required intensified hospital treatment due to the severity of the situation. Greater information and knowledge about histoplasmosis among health professionals are necessary for the management of these cases, especially in endemic areas for H. capsulatum. |
