he purpose of this research is to conduct a study of John II of Portugal (1491-1495), focusing on the construction of his image as the Perfect Prince, as well as on how he is portrayed by historiography, namely as the precursor to the modern Portuguese nation state. This portrayal is based on his policies' qualification as supposedly aimed at centralizing and strengthening the monarchical power. The documentary basis comprises Rui de Pina's and Garcia de Resende's chronicles of John II's reign, as well as Álvaro Lopes Chaves' "Livro de Apontamentos". By checking historiography against primary sources, this research purposes to understand the reasoning that presided over the construction of that image and hence to propose a new analysis of the political logic and practices during John II's reign, based on the views of the New Political History and the understanding of the Middle Ages as a corporate society. In this context, this research propounds an exercise of sources interpretation that is more receptive to the logics of the past so as to understand it from a new perspective. |
