Nela, busca-se fundamentar uma hipótese sobre a trajetória do desenvolvimento histórico do Tenetehára e demonstram-se quais as principais mudanças lingüísticas sofridas por ele através do tempo, mas também se descreve a natureza dessas mudanças, desde sua diferenciação como língua independente das demais línguas do ramo setentrional da família Tupí-Guaraní, às mudanças mais recentes, que o levaram a uma diferenciação em duas línguas distintas faladas na atualidade por povos que se distinguem um do outro, mas que se identificam como tendo tido a mesma origem. Busca-se, ainda, prover explicações para as causas das mudanças sofridas pela língua Tenetehára, quer as motivações internas à língua, quer as externas, resultantes de situações de contato. Para isso, faz-se uma abordagem histórica sobre os Tenetehára, focalizando, sobretudo, a situação de contato vivenciada por esse povo. Esse aspecto etno-histórico fundamenta-se, entre outras, nas obras de Gomes (1997; 2002). Adotase, aqui, o Método Histórico Comparativo tal como tradicionalmente vem sendo aplicado na linha de estudiosos como Meillet (1908, 1925), Hamp (1989), Lehman (1962), Rodrigues (1985, 1986, 2001), Labov (1969), Thomason e Kaufman (1988), Kaufman (1990), Campbell (1998), entre outros. Dada sua natureza comparativa, vale-se de descrições disponíveis de línguas da família Tupí-Guaraní, especificamente de línguas dos sub-ramo III, IV, V e VIII. São de particular importância os estudos de Rodrigues (1953 – 2007) sobre a família Tupí-Guaraní, sobretudo os de natureza reconstrutiva. Os principais dados da língua Tenetehára utilizados representam três estágios distintos da língua: a) os dados de Cyriaco Baptista (1932); b) o registro de Boudin (1966) e c) os dados de pesquisa dos últimos vinte anos, sobretudo os de Silva, reunidos para a presente pesquisa entre agosto de 2006 a fevereiro de 2010, junto a falantes Tembé da região do Gurupí (Pará) e Guajajára da região do Arame (Maranhão). _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe present doctoral dissertation is concerned with the internal history of the Tenetehára complex, which comprises two languages – Tembé and Guajajára – classified as members of sub-branch IV of the Tupí-Guaraní linguistic family. The main purpose of this dissertation is to bring new contributions to the knowledge of the internal diversification of the Tupí-Guaraní linguistic family. My main interest is to strengthen a hypothesis on the internal historical development of Tenetehára and to identify the nature of the changes underwent by it as it became an independent language. This study is also concerned with the path followed by Tenetehára during its development into two distinct languages, as well as on the various past contact situations to which it has been exposed and that have interfered in its development. The study has greatly benefited from the works by Wagley (1943), Galvão (1996), Wagley and Galvão (1995), Zanoni (1999), and especially those by Gomes (1997, 2002). The historical comparison was developed following the Historical Method, such as it has been exposed and applied by scholars such as Meillet (1908, 1925), Hamp (1989), Lehman (1962), Rodrigues (1985, 1986, and 2001), Labov (1969), Thomason and Kaufman (1988), Kaufman (1990), Campbell (1998), among others. As a comparative study, the present doctoral dissertation has been benefited by the descriptive studies on the Tupí-Guaraní family, especially those focusing on the sub-branches III, IV, V, and VIII. The studies done by Rodrigues since 1953 were also crucial for the development of the present study.
