Esta prática religiosa é uma das formas mais produtivas de enraizamento de suas tradições culturais, sociais e lingüísticas. O estudo parte, assim, da descrição histórico-cultural das festas em devoção aos santos padroeiros, utilizando-se de uma investigação etnográfica. A Sociolingüística Interacional foi de fundamental importância em dois aspectos: a) para observar como os eventos dos terços transferem informações no que diz respeito a valores, crenças e atitudes; e b) para analisar características sociais que afetam a língua, de modo que os significados devem ser interpretados socialmente. Desta forma, considerou-se que cada comunidade de fala analisada apresenta características específicas. Baseando-se na Antropologia Social, pôde-se fazer um resgate histórico-cultural do terço em festas de tradições rurais, além de discutir o “sagrado e o profano” nestas práticas religiosas. Esta pesquisa sobre aqueles eventos religiosos ajudou a compreender como a cultura popular cria seus modos sociais próprios de se produzir o sagrado. Por fim, a Análise do Discurso Crítica ajudou a perceber as estruturas lingüísticas do gênero discursivo, o terço, que representa uma prática social importante para a constituição da identidade social dos grupos analisados. Dentre as comunidades analisadas, Mata Preta é a que mais tende a preservar a tradição dos terços rurais cantados. Ao recitar palavras tradicionais em Latim, os rezadores as reinterpretam de acordo com a fonologia do dialeto rural local. _____________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis survey investigates terços* of rural traditions in festival situation, in some rural communities in Catalão, state of Goiás, Brazil, and sheds light on our understanding of how religious motivation is an important factor for the preservation of the rural man’s social and cultural identity. This religious practice is one of the most productive ways of rooting their cultural, social and linguistic traditions. The study starts, thus, from the historic-cultural description of the meetings dedicated to patron saints, and uses ethnographic methods of investigation. Interactional Sociolinguistics had essential importance for us in two ways: a) to observe how the events of the terços convey information about values, beliefs and attitudes; and b) to analyze social characteristics that affect language, in such a way that the meanings have to be socially interpreted. We therefore considered that each analyzed speech community presents specific characteristics. Based on Social Anthropology, we could retake the history and culture of the terço in rural tradition reunions, besides discussing the “sacred and profane” components in these religious practices. This survey of those religious events helped us understand how the popular culture creates its own social devices for the production of its sacred component. Finally, Critical Discourse Analysis helped us perceive the linguistic structures of the discourse genre, terço, which represents an important social practice for building up the social identity of the analyzed groups. Among the surveyed communities, Mata Preta is the one more akin to keeping the tradition of the terços.
