Summary: | The Covid-19 pandemic has given renewed impetus to the issue of risk of the emergence of viruses of animal origin, capable of spreading throughout the world. Ecological studies indicate that the emergence of zoonotic diseases is related to the loss, alteration or fragmentation of biodiversity, which can lead to zoonotic spillover, that is, the contagion from animals to humans. The Amazon rainforest has been indicated as one of the regions that require epidemiological attention. The risk and emergence of diseases have been considered by Pan-Amazonian countries since the 1970s, amid a new context of occupation of the biome through development policies and megaprojects. In this scenario, one of the objectives of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (TCA), signed in 1978, was precisely to “prevent and combat epidemics”. From the TCA to the Declaration of Belém (2023), how can we understand the multiple dimensions of the notion of risk in the Amazon, especially in its association with health? This paper is based on documentary sources from the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) to conduct a theoretical analysis of the dimensions of risk, in a discussion supported by references from Science and Technology Studies and contemporary debates on the Anthropocene. An ethnic/cultural dimension of health risk is identified, considering the specificities of indigenous populations, as well as a growing association between health and environmental factors, corresponding to scientific debates on ecological determinants of health. |
