Summary: Storytelling is an act pertinent to human beings in all societies and cultures. The ways of telling these stories are varied. Cinema uses the resource of adaptation of literary works, since its origin. In this investigation into art, I address the issue of transposing literary works to audiovisual, particularly animation. This is a theoreticalpoetic research that led to the production of an animation film based on the novel In The penal colony, by the Czech writer, Franz Kafka. In the development of this research, I use an autobiographical work methodology to establish the relations between Kafka's text and my creative process. The film The Penal Machine brings Kafka's work to the contemporary world, under my artistic perception.
