Riassunto: The objective of this research was to improve the reading skills of 9th grade students at a public school in Bayeux-PB, Brazil, based on teaching with reading strategies, practices and linguistic difficulties evidenced in written productions and in a large-scale assessment. In the development of this study, the qualitative methodology was used, whose procedures characterize it as a participatory, social and empirically based action research, with active involvement of the teacher-researcher with the researched community. The initial diagnosis was based on data from SAEB, through the Qedu portal and a large-scale assessment, carried out by the Education Department of the Municipality of Bayeux. An action plan was prepared and implemented with planned activities (workshops) based on the selection of texts found in textbooks, simulations published on public domain websites, and the Prova Brazil from previous years (2017 to 2021). The assessment of the application of the action plan was carried out with the same structure as the initial diagnosis (application of assessment similar to Prova Brazil and written activity). The research demonstrated that the intervention process was successful, combating the weaknesses found in the large-scale assessment regarding the weakened descriptors of the Portuguese language, with well systematized workshops with reading strategies, outlined based on the studies of Solé, together with those of Menegassi, thus enabling the learners to develop proficient reading skills and also to meet the requirements of the SAEB, relating them to the postulates provided for in the BNCC. A great advance was noted and allowed us to certify that with the application of an initiative such as this study it is possible to encourage the learner to overcome the obstacles that appear in the course of their schooling; however, these participants will be successful not only in the Portuguese language subject, but in all areas of their learning.
