Gaia: When considering the complete work of Maranhão writer Josué de Sousa Montello (1917 - 2006), it would not be an exaggeration to consider him a “complete intellectual”; A position he achieved largely due to having – in his words – invested himself, as a teenager, as an “excessive” reader and writer. At a certain point in his production, the novelist also cultivated writing diaries, more precisely from June 1952 to December 1995. Because the Diary is an essentially autobiographical genre, mainly aspects of his intellectual life, such as impressions from readings and valuable considerations regarding his intricate process of literary creation. The “warps”, as he referred to it when composing his novel, left a vast repertoire about the creative aspects of his characters, geographical settings, inspiration from historical facts and, in parallel, the setbacks inherent to artistic production, such as the so-called creative crises and constant revisions until publication. As a theoretical basis for this research, reports from various authors will be used, such as Blanchot (2005, 1987), Lejeune (2008), Giordano (2017), Mortimer; Doren (2010), Barbosa, (2012), Barthes (2004), Calvino (1993), Bakhtin (1997, 2015), Bloom (1994, 2001), Salles (1998), Willemart (1999, 2019). In this sense, the objective of this work is to investigate how diaristic writings present themselves as a “key” to an author's interpretation, using theoretical support from both the so-called “genetic criticism”, as well as text theory and literary criticism. Furthermore, it is demonstrated how they exposed their intense intellectual trajectory, and the way in which all of this converges into the composition of their main works.
