Summary: This research investigated whether the work environment and the scope of the pastoral function at the Independent Presbyterian Church of Brazil (IPIB) in São Paulo / SP are considered a means for the manifestation of Burnout in its ministers. The psychosomatic process of stress as a result of organizational and environmental conditions, as well as the tasks pertaining to the various care and teaching professions, has been the subject of research studies. To determine this condition at IPIB, the denomination as a religious organization was characterized and the scope of the pastoral function was detailed, from the formation of the minister to his duties, in order to understand the psychodynamics of pastoral work and to identify the potential stressors for occupational illness. It was made a historical cut about the Burnout Syndrome, a bibliographical review and the psychosocial and work psychodynamic approaches were chosen as theoretical reference. An extended sociodemographic questionnaire and the adapted version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) were applied according to the three dimensions that characterize Burnout Syndrome (SB): Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP) and Low Professional Achievement (BR) to verify the situation of the 51 participating pastors. Descriptive data analysis, sample characterization, demonstration of occurrence, intensity and correlation of sociodemographic factors with the three dimensions of BS recommended by the MBI were performed. Articulations were made between the main data, the presented theoretical framework and other authors following an epistemological unit, highlighting as main results: a) a mild to moderate condition in relation to the Burnout level; b) the scope of the pastoral function, by virtue of its attributions and characteristics, as enabling the stressors that lead to the SB; and c) the working environment and conditions in IPIB as non-aggravating factors for occupational illness; besides other issues that emerged from discussion of the results.
