The motivation for this article was the great importance of reading to consolidate learning in English and the difficulties often faced by teachers to teach and assess this skill in the classroom. Our study was carried on in a public school in the State of Paraná. Through qualitative research its main goal was assessing reading in the English language. Its specific purposes are to know strategies adopted by teachers to teach this skill. We also seek to know which methods have been used to measure students learning. Results highlight it is essential to continuously seek insights around reading and thus able to efficiently assess reading skills and becomes proficient readers to face different situations within a globalized world.
