Fatphobia, bullying and violence at school: a study in social representations with pre-teenagers

Summary: This article presents part of the results of a master's research regarding social representations and feelings of pre-adolescents about fatphobia, relating it to bullying, violence and school difficulties. It is a qualitative research that had Serge Moscovici's Theory of Social Representations was guiding axis and was developed in 3 (three) public schools in Sidrolândia - MS with 16 (sixteen) students from the 5th year of Elementary School, for through focus groups, one in each school. The data were transcribed and analyzed from the perspective of Bardin's content analysis. The results reveal that the body can be seen as a device of differences and intimidation due to its structure. For students, fatphobia is portrayed as bullying, which causes discomfort and discouragement from attending school due to abuse and violence, directly affecting their academic development. It was clear the feeling of pain and suffering for those who are outside the socially required standard. With this, the students internalize the negative representations about their own bodies and externalize their suffering in an aggressive way, causing violence to occur daily at school, which makes it an unsafe and totally unprepared place.

Se trata de una investigación cualitativa que tuvo como eje rector la Teoría de las Representaciones Sociales de Serge Moscovici y se desarrolló en 3 (tres) escuelas públicas de Sidrolândia - MS con 16 (dieciséis) alumnos de 5º año de Primaria, por a través de grupos focales, uno en cada escuela. Los datos fueron transcritos y analizados desde la perspectiva del análisis de contenido de Bardin. Los resultados revelan que el cuerpo puede verse como un dispositivo de diferencias e intimidación debido a su estructura. Para los estudiantes, la gordofobia se retrata como bullying, que provoca malestar y desánimo para asistir a la escuela debido al abuso y la violencia, afectando directamente su desarrollo académico. Fue evidente la sensación de dolor y sufrimiento de quienes están fuera del estándar socialmente requerido. Con esto, los alumnos internalizan las representaciones negativas sobre su propio cuerpo y exteriorizan su sufrimiento de manera agresiva, provocando que la violencia se presente diariamente en la escuela, lo que la convierte en un lugar inseguro y totalmente desprevenido. O presente artigo apresenta os resultados parciais de uma pesquisa de mestrado referente as representações sociais e as experiências vividas por pré-adolescentes a respeito da gordofobia, relacionando-a com o bullying, a violência e as dificuldades escolares. Trata-se de uma pesquisa de cunho qualitativo, o qual teve como eixo norteador a Teoria das Representações Sociais, a partir de Serge Moscovici. Foi desenvolvida em 3 (três) escolas públicas de Sidrolândia/MS, com 16 (dezesseis) alunos do 5º ano do Ensino Fundamental, por meio de grupos focais, sendo um em cada escola. Os dados foram transcritos e analisados a partir da perspectiva de análise de conteúdo de Bardin. Os resultados revelam que o corpo pode ser visto como dispositivo de diferenças e intimidações por conta de sua estrutura. Para os alunos, a gordofobia é retratada como bullying. Praticas sistemáticas que provoca desconforto e desânimo para frequentar a escola devido aos maus tratos e a violência, o que afeta diretamente o seu desenvolvimento acadêmico. Ficou clara a demonstração de sentimento, dor e sofrimento por aqueles que estão fora do padrão exigido socialmente. Com isso, os alunos internalizam as representações negativas sobre seus próprios corpos e exteriorizam seu sofrimento de forma agressiva, fazendo com que a violência ocorra diariamente na escola.
