Environmental education on the public square, Botucatu city/SP

Resumo: Science teaching can be carried out in different ways, but practical activities make the teaching more meaningful and effective trough the involvement of the students with the subject. Environmental education which is part of the Science subject in the elementary school has been seen as a way to improve life quality, changing the students’ values and attitudes towards the environment. Public squares are the appropriated setting to develop methodology in environmental education because one can treat the subject in an interdisciplinary way (involving historical, natural and political aspects). There the students immediately apply the recently acquired knowledge in the preservation and care of historical buildings of their town. The activities carried out, both in school and at the square, were related to the perception of the environment and identification of problems and solutions, aiming to build responsibilities and civic awareness. The research was carried out at Isabel Arruda square, involving 41 students from the 6th grade of an elementary school from 09/11 to 10/04/2001.

A educação ambiental que faz parte da disciplina de ciências no ensino fundamental é vista como um caminho para melhorar a qualidade de vida mudando valores e atitudes dos alunos frente ao ambiente. As praças públicas mostram-se como locais propícios para a aplicação de metodologias em educação ambiental, pois nelas pode-se abordar o tema de forma interdisciplinar (envolvendo aspectos históricos, culturais, naturais, políticos), os alunos podem aplicar os conhecimentos adquiridos prontamente (o que facilita a aprendizagem) e desperta nesses sentimentos de preservação e cuidado com o patrimônio histórico da sua cidade. O presente estudo foi desenvolvido no período de 11/09 a 04/10/2001, contando com a colaboração de uma turma de 41 alunos da 6ª série do ensino fundamental, com a qual foram realizadas atividades de percepção e observação no ambiente escolar e na praça Isabel Arruda, município de Botucatu/SP, no sentido de despertar estas capacidades nos alunos para que eles possam perceber o ambiente, reconhecer seus problemas e buscar soluções.
