Summary: This essay aims to discuss the punitive power of the State and the prison architectural strategies adopted throughout history, correlated with the increase of mass incarceration. Our purpose is to explore its reverberation in the physical spaces of the sentence, as well as in the psychological and social field, defending the existence of humanized and regenerating spaces. It also aims to propose a critical view regarding the functioning of penitentiaries, and, in addition, to explore the elements that make the executive environment of the sentence into an effective space for the regeneration of the incarcerated individual, in obedience to the basic principles of the Penal Execution Law. The methodology used is a bibliographic compilation, through classic authors of criminal law, norms of Brazilian legislation, as well as qualitative thinking from the analysis of authors and scholars in the criminal sphere and architecture.

Nosso propósito é explorar a sua reverberação nos espaços físicos de cumprimento da pena, bem como no campo psíquico do apenado e social, defendo a existência de espaços humanizados e regeneradores. Visa, outrossim, propor uma visão crítica com relação ao funcionamento das penitenciárias, e, em acréscimo, explorar os elementos que tornam o ambiente executivo da pena em um espaço eficaz de regeneração do indivíduo encarcerado, em obediência aos princípios basilares da Lei de Execução Penal.
