The semantic extensions of Japanese onomatopoeias: verbal and pictorial metaphors

Summary: The present article aims to present an overview of Japanese onomatopoeia, very common in japanese mangas, as well as the analysis of their semantic extensions arising via conceptual metaphor (Lakoff and Johnson,1980). Tomoda (1984) demonstrated some abstract features that onomatopoeias may manifest in certain discursive-verbal contexts; however, we assume that in addition to the mode mentioned, pictorial metaphor plays a fundamental role on semantic content enrichment. In such a process there are a verbal text and a term invoked pictorially through the context, thus providing a reinterpretation of that verbal text.

Tomoda (1984) demostró el caracter más abstracto que la onomatopeya puede presentar en determinados contextos discursivos-verbales, sin embargo, entendemos que además de la modalidad antes mencionada, las metáforas pictóricas (Forceville, 1996), desempeñan un papel fundamental en el enriquecimiento semántico. En ese proceso hay un texto verbal y un término invocado pictóricamente por médio del contexto, proporcionando así una reinterpretación del texto verbal.O presente artigo propõe apresentar uma visão geral dos aspectos das onomatopeias japonesas, muito presente nos mangás japoneses, bem como a análise de suas extensões semânticas advindas via metáfora conceptual (Lakoff e Johnson, 1980). Tomoda (1984) demonstrou o caráter mais abstrato que as onomatopeias podem apresentar em determinados contextos discursivo-verbal, no entanto, entendemos que além da modalidade mencionada, metáforas pictóricas (Forceville,1996) também podem desempenhar papel fundamental nesse enriquecimento semântico.
