Summary: ln this paperwe have studied the evolution ofthe Northeastem agriculture from 1960 to 1989. The main objectives were to evaluate the risks and the sustentation capacity associated to the food production in relation to agricultura! commercial production. The results showed that all food crops presented negative rates of growth in the yield per hectare and in the most of them, the risk leveis were greater than those observed in the commercial crops.

Objetivou-se avaliar os riscos e a capacidade de sustentação associados à produção de alimentos "vis-a-vis" produção de agricultura comercial.
