Road pavement in Brazil is mainly divided between rigid and flexible, which differ in terms of materials used, base layers, type of cost, dimensioning and efficiency for different types of traffic. Determining in which situations each type of pavement should be chosen has a direct influence on the construction and maintenance cost of the road and, therefore, on its viability. This work is a literature review on these two most common types of pavement: the rigid Portland cement concrete pavement and the flexible asphalt concrete pavement. Part of the history of the pavements was presented, as well as the definition of this structure and the materials used for its layers. The two types of pavement were described, as well as their multiples variations and applications. The dimensioning methods DNER (1981) and PCA (1984) were presented for the modeling of flexible and rigid pavements, respectively. Finally, an economic comparison was made between the two types of pavement.
