From Land to Common Territory: : Zapatista ontology in confrontation with the ontocide of capital in the Global South

Summary: This article presents the concept of territory and the defense of the commons in the light of the political ontology and autonomous struggle of the Zapatista Movement in Mexico. The central argument is that the ontological and epistemic matrices of Zapatista autonomy constitute a fundamental element in confronting ontocide, capital's, historic method of territorial expansion. Furthermore, there are important lessons learned from Zapatista autonomy that can inspire and dialogue with other territorial defense processes underway in the Global South. To this end, I present the political proposal of «territory in common» as a turning point in Zapatismo's analysis of the reconfigurations of capitalism, bringing to light new strategies for confronting capitalism by spoliation in the 21st century.

El argumento central es que las matrices ontológicas y epistémicas de la autonomía Zapatista constituyen un elemento fundamental para enfrentar el ontocidio, método histórico de expansión territorial del capital. Además, existen importantes lecciones aprendidas de la autonomía Zapatista que pueden inspirar y dialogar con otros procesos de defensa territorial que actualmente tienen lugar en el Sur Global. Para ello, presento la propuesta política de «territorio en común» como un punto de inflexión en el análisis del Zapatismo sobre las reconfiguraciones del capitalismo, y las nuevas estrategias para enfrentar al capitalismo por expoliación en el siglo XXI.  O presente artigo apresenta a concepção de território e da defesa dos comuns à luz da ontologia política e da luta autonômica do Movimento Zapatista, no México. O argumento central consiste em que as matrizes ontológicas e epistêmicas da autonomia Zapatista constituem um elemento fundamental no enfrentamento do ontocídio, histórico método do capital para expandir-se territorialmente. Outrossim, há aprendizagens importantes da autonomia Zapatista que podem inspirar e dialogar com outros processos de defesa territorial correntes no Sul Global.
