A recepção social da invenção e, em geral, do “novo” tem suscitado diferentes respostas, da resistência à indiferença, passando pela sacralização. Os inventores independentes constituem uma franja minoritária da produção técnico-científica, assistindo-se a uma progressiva institucionalização do processo inventivo. Interrogamos as razões que levam os inventores a perseverar numa actividade que se desenvolve à margem de qualquer vínculo institucional. Tal desvinculação reflecte-se no discurso dos entrevistados que salientam a desvalorização social de que são alvo. Esta persistência leva-nos a interrogar os factores avançados pelos próprios como potenciadores do gosto pela invenção.The approach to the field of independent invention is oriented here towards notions such as innovation, technological development, and flow and reception of novelty. Departing from a geo-sociological perspective, we emphasize factors favourable to the emergence of invention and of techno-economical development models, which characterize different societies in various continents, since we know about the existence of sedentary groups. The social response to invention, and generally to novelty, has varied from resistance to indifference and even to sacralization. Currently, independent inventors are a minoritary group in terms of techno-scientific production, as the inventive process becomes more and more institutionalized. Therefore, we explore the reasons why these inventors persevere in an activity that takes place without any institutional link. This lack of entailment is reflected in the discourses of those interviewed, who tend to emphasize they are socially devalued.
