Todavia, trata-se de um processo de formação de palavras de uma grande produtividade, ainda que muitos destes advérbios, que tomam por base as formas femininas de adjectivos vários, não estejam, na sua esmagadora maioria, dicionarizados. O objectivo desta tese consiste essencialmente em explorar as regularidades e restrições na formação dos advérbios em -mente. Após uma reflexão teórica inicial (Capítulo II), discute-se no Capítulo. III a possibilidade de o sufixo –mente se combinar com bases de categorias lexicais diferentes. No capítulo IV estuda-se o comportamento do sufixo –mente com adjectivos simples, derivados e compostos e as condições de formação de advérbios em –mente. O trabalho empírico baseia-se em dados extraídos de diversos corpora e dicionários. Finalmente, extraem-se as regularidades e as restrições na combinação dos advérbios em –mente (Capítulo V). Os resultados e conclusões podem ser úteis para o ensino e a aprendizagem da língua portuguesa, especialmente como língua estrangeira e/ou segunda.In the Portuguese grammars, we can´t find much information about the formation of the adverbs in –mente. We know that they are formed from the combination of the adverbial sufix –mente with adjectives in the feminine form and the formation is very productive. However, most of these adverbs can’t be found in the dictionaries. So the aim of this dissertation is to explore the regularities and restrictions of the formation of Portuguese adverbs in –mente. The dissertation begins with the theoretical preliminaries in Chapter II. Chapter III is devoted to the analysis of categorial combinations of the suffix –mente with different lexical categories. The behaviour of the suffix –mente with simple, derived and compound adjectives is analysed in Chapter IV, as well as morphological and semantic conditions of the formation of the adverbs in –mente. Empirical data have been extracted from several corpora and dictionaries. The regularities and restrictions of the formation are summarized in Chapter V.
