Com um passado Termal rico em património e representativo da sua importância na nossa cultura, Portugal, encontra-se na transição entre uma imagem Termal decadente e envelhecida para um futuro promissor a par da corrente europeia que visa revitalizar um sector outrora provido de um imaginário requintado e repleto de charme, potenciador de actividade económica e turisticamente apelativo. Tendo como objecto de estudo as Termas de Melgaço, a presente investigação começa por analisar o enquadramento físico e humano da região e estabelecer o impacto socioeconómico deste equipamento na população local, compreendendo em que condições o termalismo prosperou e posteriormente as razões pelas quais o interesse neste sector desvaneceu. Paralelamente estabelece-se um enquadramento arquitectónico que permite compreender a Arquitectura Termal realizada, à época, no contexto nacional e se esta manifesta a influência de estereótipos internacional. Para melhor compreender esta questão foi necessário rever o percurso histórico do Balneário Termal, desde a antiguidade ao presente, e sintetizar os marcos evolutivos que resultaram nas Termas de Melgaço e posteriormente no Balneário Termal do século XXI. Concluída esta investigação conclui-se que a revitalização das Termas é essencial para rentabilizar um recurso que outrora potenciou o desenvolvimento da região e que diversifica a oferta turística que, por si só, apresenta uma oferta muito diversificada capaz de atrair um público-alvo variado para estadias de curto e médio prazo.he present entitled the architecture Thermal, dissertation focuses on the Thermal Spa as a base element of the universe Thermal configurator, which gives the man the ability to manipulate to his benefit an exceptional natural resource, Thermal Water, without which this form of architecture would have no reason to be linking their location only and only because of the existence of this valuable asset. With a past rich in heritage Thermal and representative of its importance in our culture, Portugal, lies at the transition between a decadent and aged Thermal image to a promising future alongside the current European aims to revitalize a sector once provided with an exquisite imagery and full of charm, enhancer of economic activity and turisticamente appealing. Taking as its subject the Thermal Bath Melgaço, this research begins by analyzing the physical and human environment of the region and establishes the socio-economic impact of this equipment in the local population, including the conditions under which Hydrotherapy prospered and later the reasons for the interest in this sector faded. Parallel with sets up an architectural framework that allows us to understand the architecture Thermal performed at the time in the national context and this manifests the influence of international stereotypes. To better understand this issue was necessary to review the historical background of the Thermal Spa, since ancient times to the present, and synthesize the evolutionary milestones that resulted in Termas de Melgaço Thermal Spa and later in the XXI century.
