Summary: Considering the problems associated with the social demands and patterns that affect old age, a theoretical review of aspects that collaborate to institutionalize the prejudice directed at the elderly, as well as the stereotypes that support this phenomenon, are investigated. The ageism is manifested in a veiled way, leading people to confer positive content to their individual perception in relation to old age and to explain ageism as a collective phenomenon.

El acto se manifiesta de forma velada, llevando a las personas a conferir contenidos positivos a su percepción individual en relación a la vejez y explicar la discriminación por edad como fenómeno colectivo. Considerando-se os problemas associados às exigências e padrões sociais que afetam a velhice, investiga-se, por meio de uma revisão teórica, aspectos que colaboram para a institucionalização do preconceito dirigido aos idosos, assim como os estereótipos que sustentam esse processo.
