Resumo: The objective of this work was to evaluate how the geomorphological characteristics, use and land cover, dynamics of rainfall and the hydrological regime may contribute to the avulsion process in the flood plain on the lower course of the river basin of the Peixe River. For preparation of this work, it was necessary to conduct a literature review on the study theme and characterization of the physical environment, in addition to processing and interpretation of cartographic and hydrological data available. The methodological procedure adopted for the multi-temporal mapping of use and cover land on years 1976, 1985, 1995, 2005 and 2010, as well as getting the channel sinuosity index was based on digital processing of orbital images held in environment GIS. Hydrological data were obtained by the existing hydrometeorological network in the basin provided by ANA-BRAZIL, SIGRH / DAEE-SP, in which it was possible to assess and relate the hydrological regime of the river and the climate variability of the basin. Analysis of cartographic products indicates that the avulsion began with the breaking of the levee between the years 1962 and 1978, following the establishment of the channel between the years 1978 and 1985. The methodology was efficient, contributing to evaluate and interpretation of data and the possible consequences that may have led in the secondary channel formation process in the flood plain
