Резюме: The increase in photovoltaic (PV) panel waste in the coming years demands the implementation of effective management options. Despite being among the top eight largest producers of solar energy worldwide, with one of the highest rates of PV rooftop installations, Brazil has not yet developed policy options to address these panels at the end of their life cycle. In this context, this study aims to analyze the potential environmental impact of the growing use of photovoltaic panels in micro and mini-generators in Brazil, in order to maintain sustainability at the end of their life cycle. This research adopts four main approaches as methodology, outlined in distinct chapters: an investigation into the historical, current, and future evolution of participation in on-grid solar energy generation in Brazil, a comprehensive SWOT analysis of the sector, a bibliometric and systematic approach to mapping end-of-life alternatives researched worldwide, considering their impacts, and lastly, an application of the Leopold Matrix to identify alternatives with the lowest impact index. Alternatives such as dumping in inappropriate disposal sites, followed by landfills and incineration, showed the highest impact indices in magnitude and importance. On the other hand, key strategies to ensure the sustainability of these technologies include ecodesign, reverse logistics, and material recovery. Research and development gaps for photovoltaic panel recycling companies include the need to assess a viable volume for profitability, establish effective collection and recycling systems, and the urgency of clear regulations and public policies to promote sustainability in the solar energy sector. The results of this study have the potential to guide concrete actions to enhance the management of photovoltaic panel waste, promoting more sustainable practices and contributing to the global transition to cleaner and more responsible energy sources. The comprehensive view of the impacts associated with these alternatives contributes to the literature and practice of sustainability in the energy sector, providing support for informed decision-making aimed at implementation.
