Summary: The National Forest (Flona) of Passo Fundo, part of the Atlantic Forest Biome, is a Sustainable Use Conservation Unit, so the productive structure of its surroundings must be in line with its design. The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the main socioeconomic and productive characteristics of the Flona buffer zone, identifying its types of production and the appropriation of its sustainable modalities. The method adopted is based on the descriptive level and the qualitative approach. As research techniques, it uses bibliographical research, in an interdisciplinary perspective, and the research of primary data collection, through the application of in-depth interviews, with 18 landowners. The speeches were treated through the Bardin content analysis. The results of the study were constructed in the form of two scientific productions. The first one evaluated the motivations of the rural producers residing in the buffer zone in relation to the production process adopted. It concludes that the planting of soybeans, mainly of transgenic soybeans, is dominant in the choices and perceptions of the owners due to the need to obtain greater profitability. The second scientific production focused on the possibilities of implementation and expansion of sustainable production in the maintenance of the conservation unit of Flona Passo Fundo. The view of the farmers interviewed regarding an insertion of more sustainable forms of cultivation in their properties, such as organic production, is still limited, evidencing the importance of technical support for a greater comprehension and new alternatives of production.
