Резюме: Paracetamol is one of the most common drugs in Brazilian homes due to its good therapeutic response, but mainly because it is a low-cost and easily accessible drug. In addition, it is the most prescribed drug by the pediatric medical community. However, its indiscriminate use and without professional guidance can lead to poisoning and severe damage to health. In this context, the objective of this work is to review the toxicity of paracetamol. The survey was carried out in the PUBMED database, using “acetominophen AND toxicity” as descriptors and selected 13 articles published in the last 5 years. Paracetamol is a safe and effective medication, when used correctly and in accordance with the recommendations. But in overdoses it shows serious damage to the liver. And although this possibility exists, the line of treatment with NAC for these cases is very effective in the entire population, regardless of age. Furthermore, activated charcoal is a great ally in reducing drug absorption, significantly reducing its toxic potential.
