Summary: This study aimed to evaluate, in vitro, the influence of the use of different final irrigants on the microhardness of root dentin. Fifteen extracted human single-rooted teeth were used for the present study. The coronal portion was sectioned at the cementoenamel junction and two longitudinal grooves were made on the buccal and lingual surfaces, along the entire length of the remaining root, using a diamond disk. The roots were divided into two halves with the aid of a microtome blade, providing two samples from each root. They were fixed in self-curing acrylic resin, leaving the root canal dentin exposed. The 30 samples were sanded, polished and randomly divided into three groups (n=10), according to the final irrigant used, as follows: G1 – distilled water; G2 – EDTA 17%; G3 – QMix. The samples were irrigated with 5 ml of the final irrigants tested, remaining in contact for a period of 1 minute. The microhardness of root dentin was measured using a Vickers microhardness meter, performing 3 indentations. The reading was taken before and after the immersion of the samples in the final irrigants tested. All final irrigants tested maintained the same level of microhardness in the root dentin, when compared to the control group, with no statistical difference between them (p<0.05). It was concluded that the irrigating solutions tested did not show the ability to modify the microhardness of root dentin.
