Whakarāpopototanga: | This work investigates the relationship between the Brazilian novel and social processes, focusing in the representation of reality in the work Recordações do escrivão Isaías Caminha, by Lima Barreto (1881-1922), published in 1909. The general objective of the research is to analyze the representation of reality in the novel Memories of the escrivão Isaías Caminha (2013), by Lima Barreto (1881-1922), emphasizing the occurrences of the narrative in which there are actions of social inequalities and education. The study is based mainly on theoretical contributions by Antonio Candido (1980), which addresses the intersection between literature and society; Stuart Hall (2016), Serge Moscovici (1978), and Erich Auerbach (2013), who develop theories about literary representation; Darcy Ribeiro (1995), who reflects on the formation of Brazil and its inequalities; Lilia Moritz Schwarcz (2017), who discusses race and class; Francis of Assisi Barbosa (1952), which addresses politics in literature. The research adopts a historical approach and applied. The corpus of the investigation is made up of the novel Recordações do escrivão Isaías walks (2013), by Lima Barreto, set against the backdrop of the First Republic Brazilian. The results show that literature has a social function, carrying out critical of the nation's problems by questioning social, political and economies in Brazil. The analysis of the literary work highlights the importance of education in construction of a more just and inclusive society, highlighting the relevance of literature for reflection on social processes. |
